Getting accustomed to wearing your Dentures:
Adjusting to your new dentures takes a lot of time and patience. Even if you have worn dentures previously, it will still take time for your mouth to adjust to the new pressure points and feeling that is associated with the new set of teeth.
After wearing your denture for the first few days, it is normal for sore area’s to develop inside your mouth and we recommend a visit to our clinic for an initial adjustment.
However, during the first few weeks of usage, new sore points may trouble you that will necessitate multiple adjustment appointments.
With time, the sore areas will disappear and your mouth will get used to wearing the dentures.
Speaking with new Dentures:
The most common problem with new denture users is the feeling that they cannot pronounce words properly and the feeling that the denture will fall off.
The best way to overcome this issue is to read the newspaper aloud every morning and practice those words that give you the most difficulty. With time and practice, everything will be normal.
Another issue faced by new users is excessive saliva flow after wearing dentures. This is also normal and usually subsides in a few weeks.
Chewing with new Dentures:
Learning to chew with the new dentures usually takes 2-3 months. Start with a soft diet and gradually build up your muscles to chew harder food materials. Take small bites and try to chew from both sides of your mouth at the same time. During your appointments, inform the doctor the issues you are facing and she will be glad to help.
Maintaining your dentures:
Clean your dentures every night with a brush, soap and water to avoid stains and odor. Also, wash your dentures after every meal.
It is also advised to rest your mouth by not wearing dentures for 8-10 hours daily. When not in use, keep the dentures immersed in water.
