Pregnancy and Dental Health

Pregnancy is a life changing experience for a women and it is of utmost importance to take care during this phase of life.

Apart from the overall health, it is crucial to take care of one's dental health as well. Neglecting dental health may lead to several complications not only to the mother but to the baby as well.

Following are some of the common conditions that may come up during pregnancy and ways to avoid them:-

Bad Breath: This is a very common problem among pregnant women and can be easily taken care of by drinking plenty of water and keeping yourself hydrated.

Pregnancy Gingivitis: Hormonal changes may lead to a condition where-in the gums turn red, swollen and painful. Poor oral hygiene can further aggravate this condition. If left untreated it can eventually cause tooth loss.

This condition can be easily prevented by brushing and flossing after every meal.

Pregnancy Tumor: A painless lump may appear over the gums during pregnancy. It usually does not cause any problem and gradually subsides by itself after the baby is born. However, care should be taken and proper oral hygiene should be maintained.

Tooth Decay/Cavities: Urge to eat more often may lead to tooth decay and cavities. This issue can also be easily prevented by rinsing/brushing after every meal.

As a precaution, major dental procedures are avoided in the first and third trimesters or until the birth of the baby. However, if a problem comes up during pregnancy, the safest period for any treatment is the second trimester.

To avoid any pain during pregnancy, it is advised to visit the dentist beforehand so that any potential dental problem can be taken care of.
